1 Augsburg
Bavaria; 86150
Founded by the Romans, Augsburg reached its zenith during
the Renaissance. An important banking center during this period,
the city attained renown all across Europe for its artists and craftsmen,
above all in England, where the Augsburg painter Hans Holbein the
Younger (1498–1543) became King Henry VIII’s court painter. The
city also played a key role in the Reformation, and its past glories
are reflected in the impressive archi tecture of its city center.
