Starting in the historic city of Freiburg, this drive leaves the broad Rhine
Valley region and climbs up to the dense Black Forest on roads that twist
through tiny villages and pass large, half-timbered farmsteads. The Black
Forest is known as the land of cuckoo clocks and is famous for its Black
Forest cherry gâteau. This tour takes drivers to the excellent clock museum
in Furtwangen and to Triberg, where these timepieces can be bought as
souvenirs. The wilder region to the southeast of Freiburg comes next and
gathers around the Feldberg, which has good hiking and, in winter, skiing.
Neighboring valleys contain the tranquil lakes of Titisee and Schluchsee,
and the spa town of St. Blasien with its Baroque church.BACK ROADS GERMANY
