Situated between the Baltic and the North seas and bordered by the Elbe river and Denmark,

Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost state in Germany. A predominantly maritime region,

it has endless white sand beaches and impressive lakes. The stops along this route include a

visit to the historic old town of Lübeck, an architectural gem and a UNESCO World Heritage

Site, and to the lovely lakes around Plön. The drive traverses pretty, tree-lined country roads

through a largely agricultural region, where the pace of life is more relaxed, pausing at the

charming towns of Holstein’s Switzerland. The trip also weaves in a visit to the city of Kiel,

which hosts the annual Kieler Woche, the biggest maritime

festival in northern Europe.
