Land of a Thousand Lakes

Numerous glacial lakes give the heart of Mecklenburg-Lower Pomerania

(Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) its nickname, the “Land of a Thousand Lakes.” This

aquatic mosaic encompasses everything from small freshwater seas to myriad minor

pools in the Müritz-Nationalpark, where astonishing birdlife is as much a part of

the scenery as sweeping vistas. This tour takes drivers from coast to country: from

the cobbled lanes of the medieval port of Wismar to Schwerin, the capital of the

state, with its enchanting castle, then east into the state’s rustic heart around

Güstrow, finally ending at Neustrelitz, the former Residenzstadt of a duchy.
