GETTING AROUND

None of the distances are very great. Maaseik, which

lies close to the border with the Netherlands, is only

100 km (62 miles) east of Brussels. Motorways straddle

the region, linking Antwerp and Brussels in the west

to Tongeren in the southeast (and Liège further south),

and provide important transport links to Germany and

the Netherlands. Travelling to the many towns and vil-

lages is made possible by buses operated by De Lijn,

which also runs the tram service in Antwerp. Most

towns are also on the national rail network.
