Bouillon (see pp230–33),

located in the south of the

Ardennes, is famous for

its picturesque medieval

castle set on a rocky spur

near the Semois. Once the

home of the 11th-century

crusader knight Godefroid

de Bouillon, the castle

now forms a romantic

backdrop to this quiet

and elegant little town.

Liège (see pp216–19), capital of the

Province of Liège, has a number of

fine churches. This includes the superb

Église St-Jacques, which fuses the

Romanesque with Flamboyant Gothic.

Rochefort (see p211), in

the Province of Namur,

is one of many places in

the Ardennes to have an

extensive cave system (see

pp208–9). The Grotte de

Lorette-Rochefort has a

visitor centre, from where

paths lead sharply down

for 80 m (262 ft), past

encrustations of stalac-

tites and stalagmites, to

halls of vast, rugged rock.
