The magnificent 18th-century
Groesbeeck de Croix mansion
has been preserved and res-
tored in Enlightenment and
Louis XV styles to provide a
sympathetic backdrop for an
impressive collection of paint-
ings, sculpture, antique fur-
niture, tapestries, gold and
silverwork, clocks and objets
d’art. Outside the mansion
is a pleasant formal garden.

One of the great Baroque
churches of Belgium, the
Église St-Loup was built for
the Jesuits between 1621
and 1645. Its striking façade,
adorned by muscular banded
pillars, gives way to an equally
robust interior with banded
pillars of coloured marble
and a contrasting ceiling of
carved sandstone. The French
poet Charles Baudelaire, a
friend of the Namur artist
Félicien Rops (1833–98), suf-
fered a stroke here in 1866,
the year before his death; he

A gifted Symbolist artist,
Félicien Rops was born in
Namur. He is known for his
vividly imagined compositions,
often macabre and sacrile-
gious. Rops moved to Paris in
1874, where he led a colour-
ful life among the avant-garde
literary set and became a
successful illustrator of their
work. Set in an 18th-century
townhouse, Musée Provincial
Félicien Rops has a collection
of about 3,000 paintings, prints
and draw ings by Rops. It show-
cases a large selection of the

which he found to be deli-
ciously funereal. It is now
used for concerts.
