Exploring the Grand

Duchy of Luxembourg

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg measures only 80 km (50 miles)
from top to bottom. Its capital, Luxembourg City, is in the south-
ern sector, where the bulk of the population is settled. Called the
Gutland (Good Land), the south is also the main farming region.
The old industrial heartland of the southwest, the centre of the
iron and steel industries, is known as Minette, or the Red
Lands for the ore-tinted colour of the soil. The north, called
the Eisléck or Oesling, is dominated by the wooded hills
of the Ardennes and is more sparsely populated. The
famously beautiful landscape of Little Switzerland is
in the east. There are four main rivers: the Sûre, which
crosses the Ardennes; the Alzette, which flows through
Luxembourg City; the Moselle, which forms the south-
eastern border with Germany, and provides a fertile
valley for Luxembourg’s vineyards; and the Our
which marks the rest of the German border.
