The history of Luxembourg is
revealed in this sleek, ultra-
modern museum ingeniously
converted from four town-
houses dating from the 17th
to 19th centuries. Modern
interactive display techniques
combine with artifacts and
informational panels to nar-
rate the story of the city. An
added attraction is the view
and reinforced by Siegfried of
Lorraine, and became the key
stronghold of the city for cen-
turies. Between 1737 and 1746,
the Austrians excavated soft
sandstone beneath the castle,
creating a network of galleries,
staircases and tunnels over a
distance of 23 km (14 miles).
These casemates included gun
emplacements for 50 canons,
munitions stores, workshops,
stables and kitchens: sufficient
for a garrison of 1,200 men.
They were part of a pro-
gramme of reinforcements
that made the city almost
impregnable – or what French
military engineer Lazare
Carnot (1753–1823) termed
the Gilbraltar of the North.
The casements were also
used as bomb shelters for
35,000 people during World
War II. Tours take visitors
around a small portion of the
tunnels. The Archaeological
Crypt presents the excavated
remains of the Bock castle.

A group of elegant town houses
and a monolithic modern block
combine to form the intriguing
Musée National d’Histoire et
d’Art. The historical section
of the museum covers the
history of Luxembourg from
prehist oric to medieval times,
and includes numerous
Gallo-Roman treasures from
archaeological finds: coins,
mosaics, sculpture, jewellery
and domestic wares. There are
also decorative and fine arts,
paintings from the Middle Ages
to modern times and work by
artists from all over Europe,
including watercolours of the
city by landscape painter
JMW Turner (1775–1851).
