A
merica has seen dire stock downturns and
mighty bull runs—and that’s counting only this
past week. Coronavirus alerts, falling interest
rates, and election-year plot twists are taking
turns dealing gloom and glee—mostly gloom. Bonds
have gone bananas. Remember simpler times, when
the 10-year Treasury yield was a whole number?
Take heart. The tumult has scared up good deals.
Inside this issue, Andrew Bary looks at high-yield
stocks that can keep the payments coming, and weighs
in on gold. Randy Forsyth says don’t forsake bonds—
they’re good as portfolio ballast and could post further
gains. Wall Street is awash in safety advice, but there’s
a rumor going around that fear won’t always reign. Just
in case there’s any truth to it, Streetwise says a marked-
down but sturdy tool maker, a chicken chain, and even
an airline are better long-term bets than pricey pantry
stocks. It also offers hard-won advice about working
from home with two kids and a disorderly dog.
Tail risk, indeed.—Jack Hough
