house before getting married at the age of 40,
was an accomplished artist, smoked like a
trooper and could drink anyone under the
table.
I clap for her too, because I never got the
chance to tell her how proud I am of her
and how much she inspires me to this day,
every day.
Like me, reader Shirley Bedford is reminded
of the wartime effort made by her family.
She writes: “Just thought I would share this
photograph taken in the 1940s of my father,
Sowler Burton and his neighbour Thomas
Greenwood. It was during the
Second World War and the
country had been told to ‘Dig For
Victory’.
“ This was wasteland where
me and my friends used to
play, but they started an
allotment there so we lost
our playground!
“My father and his
neighbours and friends used
to exchange different produce
which they had grown. I can
remember this photograph being
taken – even though I was only a
very little girl. The allotment carried
on for years after the war, until the
local council decided to build
bungalows there. Happy
memories.”

STUCK at home in self-isolation?
Feeling tired and sluggish? You
need to get that body moving to
help your own mental and
physical health.
So the Daily Express is bringing
you a daily exercise from award-
winning fitness coach Julie
Bartlett. They are especially
suitable for older readers and are
designed to be carried out at
home with no specialist
equipment.
Julie, who runs health and
wellness workshops for John
Lewis in Bluewater and Mazda
Cars, says: “These exercises are
simply designed to get you
moving. You won’t need any fancy
equipment and just wear
something loose and comfortable.
All you will need is two tins or two
plastic bottles filled with liquid
and a pair of old tights or a
resistance band.
“Do what feels right. If you want
to make it harder, then make your
movements bigger or do more
repetitions. If you need to make it
easier, do less and build up. And
always remember to warm up and
cool down with gentle stretches.”

I AM taking notice of
everything that’s being
advised re. social distancing.
My husband has the 12-week
“stay at home” letter, I am 77
and in good health so am
allowed to shop etc. I haven’t
read anything to tell me if I can
safely come back into the
house and carry on living as
normal. Having been outside,
do I have to social-distance
from my husband? Please can
you make this clearer?

THE letter your husband
has received is for those
who are considered to be
highly vulnerable to possible
severe infection from
coronavirus.
They are therefore being
advised to shield themselves
from the virus for self-
protection, staying at home for
12 weeks and avoiding face to
ºface contact with anyone
apart from those that you live
with.
You are not required to adopt
these strict measures but you
should do what you can to
support your husband. That
means stringently following
guidance on social distancing
and reducing your contact as
much as possible with anyone
else outside your home.
Always wash your hands
thoroughly after you come in
from going out, especially if
you have been shopping.
You should also minimise the
time you spend together in
close proximity, so if possible
sleep in a separate bedroom,
and sit apart when watching
TV. Use separate towels, and
clean the bathroom and toilet
handle after use.

works your ankles,
hips, shoulders
and arms. Aim for
eight repetitions
on each side. To
make this more
aerobic you can
add in a little jump
as you transfer to
each leg.

Stand relaxed
with hands
close to your
chest holding the
tins/bottles.

Take a step
out to the right
side (a toe tap on
the floor) as you
punch lightly over
to the left side
with your right
arm.

Repeat on the
other side.
Don’t push out
too far and keep
your shoulders
down and
relaxed.
