nyone who has been to either San Francisco
or Leader, Sask., knows the two municipal-
ities are not alike. But when your mode of
transportation is a balloon, you go where
the wind takes you. Businessman and adventurer
Steve Fossett discovered the vagaries of the breezes
on this day in 1995, when he became the first person
to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon. Fos-
sett had set out four days earlier from Seoul, South
Korea, in a state-of-the-art hot-air balloon, which
floated eastward with the jet stream. His balloon was
emblazoned with the words Seoul to San Francisco, his hoped-for destination. It was a rough trip. Fos-
sett, in a gondola about the size of a compact car,
used an oxygen mask at high altitude, slept in three-
hour stretches and endured bitterly cold temper-
atures. Finally, after more than 8,700 kilometres, the
exhausted Chicago native and his 45-metre-tall bal-
loon landed softly in a farmer’s muddy field near
Leader (population less than 1,000), which is about
350 km east of Calgary, 1,000 km east of the Pacific
Ocean and whose previous claim to fame was being
the only known Saskatchewan habitat for the rare
Ord’s kangaroo rat.PHILIPKINGFEB.22,STEVEFOSSETTBECOMES
