tions. And many investors are
concerned that Japan’s econ-
omy could be particularly ex-
posed to the coronavirus.
“Suddenly with very poor
economic data and coronavi-
rus fears, I think the market is
looking at the possibility, or at
least the risk, that you get a
technical recession in Japan,”
said Brian Daingerfield, head
of G10 FX Strategy for the U.S.
at NatWest Markets, referring
to the potential for two
straight quarters of economic
contraction. That in turn could
push the Bank of Japan to
adopt new stimulus measures,
which could weigh on the yen,
he added.
This week’s move in the yen
is noteworthy because the cur-
rency has, for many years,
served as a haven for inves-
tors—strengthening during
times of political and eco-
nomic uncertainty and weak-
ening when optimism grows.
Some analysts, though, say
they believe the dollar could
challenge the yen as a haven.
One reason is that the U.S. is
relatively insulated from the
rest of the world because ex-
ports account for a small
share of its economic output.

The dollar rose sharply
against the yen for a second
straight session Thursday, fu-
eling discussion about a shift
in currency markets.
The dollar climbed 0.7%
against the yen to 112.11 yens
per dollar,
building off a
1.4% gain on
Wednesday.
Though hard-pressed to ex-
plain the magnitude of its de-
cline, analysts attributed the
yen’s weakness to several fac-
tors, including disappointing
Japanese economic data and
solid U.S. figures.
According to a report re-
leased early this week, Japan’s
economy contracted at an an-
nualized rate of 6.3% in the
October-December quarter.
That was worse than econo-
mists’ forecast of a 3.9% de-
cline and raised the possibility
that the world’s third-largest
economy could slip into a re-
cession this quarter.
At the same time, U.S. eco-
nomic reports—including
those on employment and
manufacturing activity—have
largely been beating expecta-

Although domestic oil
stockpiles rose for the fourth
consecutive week during the
week ended Feb. 14, the En-
ergy Information Administra-
tion’s report showed invento-
ries increased by 415,000
barrels, a much smaller rise
than the 3.4-million barrel
climb expected by analysts
and traders surveyed by The
Wall Street Journal.

Additionally, stockpiles of
gasoline and distillates, which
include heating oil and diesel
fuel, declined.
Analysts are looking to
coming data points to gauge
whether the market will be
oversupplied moving forward.
Crude inventories were just
2% below the five-year aver-
age for this time of year at the
end of last week, Thursday’s

report showed. Plentiful stock-
piles in other Organization for
Economic Cooperation and De-
velopment nations have also
limited oil-price gains.
Elsewhere in commodities
Thursday, natural-gas prices
extended a recent stretch of
volatility by erasing a morning
surge to close down 1.8% at
$1.920 a million British ther-
mal units.

Oil stockpiles rose for a fourth straight week the period ended Feb. 14, but not as much as expected.

Oil prices edged higher
Thursday, preserving a recent
recovery after weekly inven-
tory figures showed U.S. crude
stockpiles rose less than ex-
pected last week, quelling
some fears about the impact
of the coronavirus.
U.S. crude
futures closed
up 0.9% at
$53.78 a barrel on the New
York Mercantile Exchange,
posting their highest close
since Jan. 24 and trimming
some of their recent slide.
Prices are still well below a
peak hit Jan. 6 amid worries
that lower fuel demand in Asia
as a result of the fallout from
the coronavirus will result in a
glut.
Oil pared some of its earlier
Thursday advance as stocks
fell in midday trading and
safe-haven assets such as gold
and bonds rallied. The dollar
also extended a recent surge
with traders seeking shelter in
investments more tied to the
U.S. economy, challenging
commodities like oil that are
denominated in the currency
by making them more expen-
sive for overseas buyers.
Brent crude, the global
gauge of oil prices, rose 0.3%
to $59.31 a barrel on the Inter-
continental Exchange.
Analysts have been antici-
pating deeper production cuts
from the Organization of the
Petroleum Exporting Countries
and its allies, easing some
worries about excess supply.

But now doubts have set in
as some analysts question
whether investors have been
too optimistic in their reac-
tion. “People are saying, ‘Wait
a minute, is China going to get
back to business as quickly as
we thought?’” said David Laf-
ferty, chief market strategist
at Natixis Investment Manag-
ers.
The S&P 500 dropped 12.92

points, or 0.4%, to 3373.23,
while the Nasdaq Composite
declined 66.21 points, or 0.7%,
to 9750.96. Both indexes had
closed at records Wednesday.
Although fourth-quarter
earnings for companies around
the world have generally been
viewed as better than or in
line with expectations, fore-
casts for 2020 are being tem-
pered by the impact of the

U.S. stocks dropped in a
volatile session as concerns
mounted that the coronavirus
outbreak could have more of
an impact on corporate earn-
ings and global growth than

investors initially believed.
Major indexes opened little
changed but dropped sharply
midday without a clear cata-
lyst. The Dow Jones Industrial
Average fell as
much as 388
points before
bouncing back
to recover most of its losses
and end the day down 128.05
points, or 0.4%, at 29219.98.
For the most part, stocks
have been resilient in the
midst of the viral outbreak.
When the coronavirus erupted
into the headlines last month,
many analysts expected mar-
kets to follow the pattern of
past pandemics, such as se-
vere acute respiratory syn-
drome, when stocks sold off
sharply at the outset, only to
rebound once the rate of infec-
tions slowed.

outbreak. Procter & Gamble
warned Thursday that the cor-
onavirus will have a material
impact on its sales and earn-
ings for the current quarter,
citing reduced store traffic in
China and disruptions to its
supply chain. That followed a
similar announcement from
Appleearlier this week.
Goldman Sachs analysts,
meanwhile, warned in a re-
search note that investors may
be too sanguine about the re-
silience of corporate earnings
in the face of the outbreak.
“We believe the greater risk
is that the impact of the coro-
navirus on earnings may well
be underestimated in current
stock prices, suggesting that
the risks of a correction are
high,” the Goldman analysts
said, referring to the potential
for a 10% pullback by major
stock indexes.
Prices for gold and U.S.
government bonds rose as in-
vestors bought assets seen as
havens. Gold futures gained
0.6%, to $1,616.60, their high-
est level in about seven years.
The yield on the 10-year U.S.
Treasury note fell to 1.524%,
from 1.569% on Wednesday.
Bond yields fall as prices rise.
