Do you invite guest speakers?
As members of the NWPA and PAGB, we
book speakers via the official speakers’ list
provided by the PAGB. We also invite a wide
variety of speakers both amateur and
professional from outside of the PAGB list
covering all genres of photography. Our
speakers not only cover club/competition
photography but a whole array of topics
for those wishing to specialise in a chosen
subject. We invite real-world professional
photographers who are always very
entertaining and extremely knowledgeable.

Do members compete in regional or
national competitions?
We are a relatively new club, and our members
are just starting to branch out into salon
photography. As a club, we enter both regional
and national competitions, and we also
compete in competitions against other clubs.

How many members do you have?
We have around 25 members currently, with
around 20 attending each session. Our venue

5 Common Mallow by
Stuart McPhee A soft
background is essential
in a shot like this for
bringing out the delicacy
of the pink petals and
their beautiful veining.

1 In Need of a Baa-ber
by Julie Simpson A
witty animal portrait; the
B&W conversion brings
out the textures of the
fleece beautifully.

2 Splash by Kay
Newman A nicely
contained and muted
colour palette, with the
image taking a simple
and effective route.

6 Kimi by Martin
Bailey An excellent
action shot that
demonstrates you don’t
always need to show the
entire vehicle – the tight
crop adds tension.

What does your club offer to new members?
A warm, welcoming group of people willing
to help every member new or old to improve
their photography skills. Prospective new
members are welcomed as guests free of
charge for a few meetings to allow them to
experience what we have to offer prior to
taking out a membership.

Describe a typical club meeting
We open up at 7pm, when members assist in
setting up our meeting room for the planned
evening’s event, which starts at 7.30pm. This
30-minute window gives us time to welcome
any new members, guests and speakers, and
make them feel at home. As we hold the keys
to our venue, we have no time constraints
imposed upon us, but are usually finished
before 10pm. Some members will stay for
a social half an hour or so after the meeting
and be on hand for any questions or to offer
advice. We have full bar facilities, so our
members have the choice of alcoholic or soft
drinks, and we offer tea/coffee and biscuits at
our mid-session interval.
