into a blister or two, although usually
not. (This does not resemble the
irritation caused by poison ivy, as so
many other plant dermatital reactions
do.) The darkened areas can remain for
several months and, if severe enough,
can cause light scars. To avoid
problems, work with the plants only
on cloudy days or in the late evening
when the sun is down, and wear long
sleeves, long pants, and gloves.
other maintenance Requires
well-draining soil. Fennel is tolerant of
drought and heat. Fairly short-lived.

pruning Plants require constant
pruning to keep in bounds, especially
when placed in the wrong location
such as a perennial border. Best used
as a groundcover on its own. Requires
deadleafing—a tedious task—if plants
get dry in the summer, which causes
scorching. Plants are semi-evergreen
and require spring cleanup to remove
foliage damaged from harsh winters.
Do not prune for the winter.
other maintenance Can be
extremely invasive when planted with
other low-growing perennials, which
strawberry will overtake. I had a single
plant spread over a 9 ft. × 9 ft. area in 4
years, weaving between and over
everything in its path. The spread of
this particular plant was stopped by a
wet and cold winter, to the point where
nothing remained. Well-draining soil
is essential, particularly in the winter.
Hardiness is unclear.
