T
im Miller may be the director
of Deadpool, but he’s better
known in videogame circles as
the co-founder of Blur Studio,
which produced CG trailers
for the likes of The Old Republic, Mass
Effect 2, and Rocksteady’s Arkham
trilogy. It’s the driving force behind this
(mostly) animated anthology of 18 short
sci-fi stories about everything from a
monster-infested Soviet Union to a
yoghurt’s bid for world domination.
Starting life as a reboot of French
comic Heavy Metal, Love, Death +
Robots is as violent, imaginative, and
- despite being aimed at adults –
juvenile as the series that inspired it. All
but two of the (six- to 17-minute)
episodes were adapted from short
stories by the likes of Peter F Hamilton,
Alastair Reynolds, and John Scalzi.
They’ve been animated
using a range of styles.
Despite the brief
runtimes there are some
memorable tales here
covering the gamut of
tones from charming
comedies to grim horror.
The quality is consistent,
with only a few duds.
Just like Heavy Metal,
the dubious depiction of
women can leave a bad
taste. And the absence
of any unifying purpose
means some shorts feel
aimless. But whether you
dip in and out over
weeks, or binge in an
evening, there are gems
here. Jordan Farley
