Nicolas Deslauriers
scored the fastest hat trick
in Anaheim history, Ryan
Miller made 40 saves and the
Ducks rolled to a 5-2 victory
over the Ottawa Senators on
Tuesday night.
Deslauriers completed a
natural hat trick 11:49 into
the game with a wrist shot
from the left circle that went
off Ottawa goaltender Mar-
cus Hogberg’s glove and
shoulder to give the Ducks a
4-0 lead. It was his second
goal in 32 seconds, after he
scored on a one-timer from
the slot.
Deslauriers’ first goal of
the night came at 2:45 after
he took a cross-ice pass from
Carter Rowney and beat
Hogberg to the short side
with a wrist shot. Jakob Silf-
verberg opened the scoring
43 seconds earlier when he
deflected Rickard Rakell’s
shot into the net on a power
play.
It was Deslauriers’ first
hat trick in 375 NHL games.

The left wing came into the
game with four goals this
season. Teemu Selanne held
the previous Ducks mark for
quickest hat trick at 12:58 in
19 9 7.
Deslauriers’ hat trick was
the third one completed in
the first period in the fran-
chise’s 26-year history.
It was the NHL’s first na-
tural hat trick in the first 20
minutes since Dallas’ Jamie
Benn did it April 7, 2018,
against the Kings.
“Just scoring a goal for

me is something special,
Deslauriers said. “It’s pretty
weird. It’s a first for me.”
The Ducks — who have
earned a point in four con-
secutive games — were out-
shot 42-15 but scored on five
of their first eight shots.
Rakell had a goal and an
assist, and Rowney and
David Backes each had two
assists.
Brady Tkachuk and
Colin White had a goal and
an assist for Ottawa, which
had won four of five.

Former Sparks general
manager Penny Toleris su-
ing the WNBA team, saying
in a lawsuit she was fired for
raising complaints about in-
appropriate sexual relation-
ships involving the team
president and a managing
partner, not for using a rac-
ial slur.
Toler was dismissed Oct.
4 after a profanity-laced
postgame tirade that in-
cluded using a racial slur.
In the suit filed Tuesday
accusing the team of gender
discrimination, Toler said
her termination had more to
do with retaliation “after
raising complaints about
the workplace conduct” of
former team president
Christine Simmons and
team managing partner and
governor Eric Holoman.
The lawsuit said they “were
engaged in an extramarital
affair.”
Toler also states in the
suit there was a double
standard for male employ-
ees, including the team’s for-
mer coach from 2015 to 2018,
who was Brian Agler, al-
though the suit doesn’t men-
tion Agler by name.
Holoman said he was not
aware of a lawsuit being
filed. Neither Simmons nor
Agler could immediately be
reached for comment.

J.B. Bickerstaff, who
took over as coach of the
Cleveland Cavaliers when
John Beileinresigned last
month, agreed to a multi-
year contract with the team.

Rams awarded

pick in the draft

The NFL awarded the

Rams a compensatory
third-round draft pick, giv-
ing the team much-needed
capital as it approaches the
April 23-25 draft.
Thirty-two compensa-
tory picks were awarded to
15 teams that lost “more or
better compensatory free
agents” than it acquired in
the previous year.
The Rams were awarded
the 104th overall pick based
on a formula that took into
the account the loss of safety
Lamarcus Joynerand offen-
sive lineman Rodger Saf-
fold, and the acquisition of
linebacker Clay Matthews.
The Rams do not have a
first-round pick in this year’s
draft. They traded their 2020
and 2021 first-round picks to
the Jacksonville Jaguars in a
midseason trade for corner-
back Jalen Ramsey.
They now have one pick
in the second round, two in
the third and one each in the
fourth, fifth, sixth and sev-
enth rounds.
The Rams also waived
kick returner-receiver JoJo
Natson, who finished last
season on injured reserve af-
ter suffering a hamstring in-
jury against the Arizona
Cardinals on Dec. 1.

The Carolina Panthers
signed quarterback Kyle
Allento a one-year contract
extension. Financial terms
were not available. Allen had
3,322 yards passing and a
62% completion rate but had
16 passes intercepted and
fumbled seven times. He
threw 17 touchdown passes.
... Guard Marshal Yanda, 35,
is retiring after 13 seasons in
which he was selected to the
Pro Bowl eight times and
helped the Baltimore
Ravens win the 2012 Super
Bowl. ... Linebacker Chris-
tian Kirkseywas released by
the Cleveland Browns after
six seasons.

ODDS

PHOENIX — Ross Strip-
ling is scheduled to pitch
four innings Thursday, the
Dodgers stretching out the
right-hander as a starter
even though, barring injury,
he is expected to begin the
season in his familiar swing-
man role, pitching mostly
out of the bullpen with an oc-
casional spot start.
Manager Dave Roberts
announced Monday the
Dodgers will open the sea-
son with a rotation of Clay-
ton Kershaw, Walker
Buehler, David Price, Julio
Urias and Alex Wood, but
that has hardly deterred
Stripling.
“In my eyes, I’m compet-
ing for the fifth spot in the ro-
tation — that’s the mind-set
I have to have,” Stripling
said. “As long as I’m getting
built up and getting that op-
portunity to start as much
as anyone else, I’m happy.”
Stripling, 30, was a Na-
tional League All-Star in
2018, when he went 8-2 with a
2.08 ERA in 25 games, 14 of
them starts, in the first half,
striking out 108 and walking
14 i n 9 5^1 ⁄ 3 innings. He fin-
ished with an 8-6 record and
3.02 ERA and in 2019 went 4-4
with a 3.47 ERA in 32 games,
15 of them starts.
Stripling thought he
would finally solidify a rota-
tion spot in early February
when reports surfaced that
he and outfielder Joc Peder-
son would be traded to the
Angels in a move that was
linked to the Mookie Betts
deal.
Stripling and Pederson
were in limbo for five days

while the Dodgers, Red Sox
and Twins ironed out com-
plications of an agreed-upon
three-team trade that would
send Betts and David Price
to the Dodgers, but the An-
gels pulled out of the pact,
and Stripling and Pederson
remained Dodgers.
“When you think about
the trade, the one good thing
was that I could go some-
where and spread my wings,
make 30 starts if I stay heal-
thy, whereas here, that op-
portunity doesn’t really ex-
ist,” Stripling said.
“But there are no hard
feelings. I like this role. It’s
been good for me, and I know
they really value it. I’ve
found a good little niche. But
I still want to get into that
[starter’s] routine and have
that leash and know they’re
going to let me go. It will hap-
pen at some point.”
In the meantime, Strip-
ling is working to improve
his repertoire by experi-
menting with a new change-
up grip, which he believes
will turn the off-speed offer-
ing into more of an out pitch.
“I’ve gone back and forth
between a four-seam and a
two-seam grip,” Stripling
said. “I throw mostly four-
seam fastballs, so I was us-
ing a four-seam changeup
[grip] for a while, but it was
spinning funny and not get-
ting much movement.
“So I went to a two-seam
[grip] and was getting some
movement and having some
success with it. Now I’m try-
ing to make it look as much
like my fastball as I can. The
ones I’ve thrown well have
much more movement.”
Several conversations
with hitters, teammates and

opponents motivated Strip-
ling, who also throws a fast-
ball, slider and curve. “They
say, ‘I see your changeup the
whole way,’ from the glove to
out of my hand, and the way
it spins,” Stripling said.
“We’re trying to combat
that.
“People always say, ‘Hey,
if you had that, it would
be a great weapon.’ But in
the middle of June, I’m try-
ing to get guys out. I’m not
going to spend an hour a day
working on a new pitch and
get lost.”
The new grip produced a
pitch that goes down and in
to right-handed hitters.
“If you look at my arsenal
and what I do to righties, a
lot of things are moving
right-to-left, so you can al-
most eliminate the inner half
against me,” Stripling said.
“Sometimes I’ll work up-
and-in, but I’ll rarely live up
there.
“If I can throw something
that looks down the middle,
assuming it will break [to
the outside] and then break
[to the inside], that will be a
good weapon for me.”
Stripling already has an
effective pitch-mix but can
be better with an improved
changeup.
“He’s a major league
starter — that’s a fact,” Dod-
gers manager Dave Roberts
said. “There are very few
guys who can command four
pitches that are big league
pitches, can get righties and
lefties out. Ross has that
ability and the head to at-
tack hitters and understand
how to go about that.”

Staff writer Jack Harris
contributed to this report.

ROSS STRIPLING MIGHT have become one of the Angels’ top starters, but for
now, the former All-Star will begin the season in the Dodgers’ bullpen.

AT THE PLATE: Shohei
Ohtani has two hits in 19
at-bats this spring. He
struck out twice Tuesday,
increasing his Cactus
League total to 11. Ohtani
said a few days ago that he
was “taking baby steps.
Right now I’m looking for
feel and seeing the ball at
the plate. I’d rather not
have lucky hits. I’d rather
keep those for the
season.” Manager Joe
Maddon does not think
Ohtani needs extra
repetitions in side games.
“He needs major league
games to start,” Maddon
said. “I told him he is
going to hit .300 this year.
He needs bright lights. He
needs the game to count.
He’s going to be just fine.”

ON THE MOUND:Reliever
Ty Buttrey, sidelined since
the second week of spring
training because of an
oblique issue, pitched for
the first time. In a
scoreless inning, he
reached his usual
upper-90s velocity. He
said he felt comfortable
and did not struggle with
his mechanics. “I was kind
of surprised,” he said. “I’m
just amped up. That’s
good to see, especially this
early in my first outing. My
velo’s good, and I just want
to fine-tune the location a
little bit and start working
the changeup and slider a
little more.” ... Starter
Dylan Bundy, who yielded
one hit and no runs in his
first 7^1 ⁄ 3 innings, gave up
two runs and three hits
over four innings. He
struck out five.

EXTRA BASES:The
Angels reassigned seven
players to minor league
camp, including infield
prospect Jahmai Jones
and pitching prospect
Hector Yan, who are both
on the 40-man roster.
Jones was optioned to
triple-A Salt Lake and Yan
to advanced Class-A
Inland Empire, promotions
in each case. ... Dillon
Peters sprained his ankle
coming down clubhouse
stairs after his start
against the Kansas City
Royals on Friday. He was
scheduled to pitch again
Wednesday but was
pushed back. The injury
should not affect Peters’
availability to begin the
regular season.

UP NEXT:The Angels will
host the Oakland Athletics
at Tempe Diablo Stadium
at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Jose
Suarez is scheduled to
start. TV: Fox Sports West.
Radio: AM 830.
