When the weather warms, our attention spans start
to wane. That’s why our annual Summer Flash Con-
test asks writers to spend the hottest part of the year
writing short – short-short, that is. We invited readers
to submit work in any genre – fiction or nonfiction –
as long as the final submission fell under 1,000
words. Here are the first-, second-, and third-place
