Climate change is taking its toll on
one of the world’s coldest places.
A study suggests that the Arctic
“may be essentially ice-free during
summer within 15 years.”
The study used statistical models to
predict the future amount of Arctic ice,
which suggested that the Arctic could
be ice-free in the summer during the
decade of the 2030s – most likely in
the year 2034.
Sea ice is frozen ocean water that
melts each summer, then refreezes
each winter. The amount of summer
sea ice in the Arctic has been steadily
shrinking over the past few decades
because of global warming. It reached
its second-smallest level on record in
2019, the National Oceanic and Atmos-
pheric Administration (NOAA) said.
Sea ice affects Arctic communities
and wildlife such as polar bears and
walruses, and it helps regulate the
planet’s temperature by influencing
the circulation of the atmosphere and
ocean.
“The extent of Arctic ice is impor-
tant to Arctic peoples, whose lands are
being affected by increased coastal
erosion,” NOAA said in a statement.
“Conversely, the disappearance of ice
creates economic opportunities, in-
cluding the opening of oil fields and
new shipping routes.”
It also affects global weather pat-
terns.
The study was conducted by scien-
tists at NOAA, the University of Wash-
ington, and the North Carolina Insti-
tute for Climate Studies.
What scientists refer to as the first
“ice-free” Arctic summer year will oc-
cur when the Arctic has less than 1 mil-
lion square kilometers of sea ice. (The
thick ice sheets surrounding Canada’s
Arctic islands are likely to remain for
much longer, even in summer.)
The study was published in the
journal Climate.

Multiple investigations were un-
derway Sunday after a Chicago man
accused of illegally moving between
two train cars was shot by police offi-
cers in an altercation caught on cell-
phone video that the mayor described
as “extremely disturbing.”
The man, who was not identified,
was in critical condition at Northwest-
ern Hospital, police said. Both officers
involved in the incident Friday were

being restricted from field duties and
placed on administrative duties pend-
ing the outcome of the investigations.
The shooting took place hours after
Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Chicago Police
and the Chicago Transit Authority an-
nounced a comprehensive plan to tackle
crime on public transit.
The incident began when two officers
assigned to the Mass Transit Unit at-
tempted to stop the man from moving
between the cars, which violates a city
ordinance, police said. A struggle en-
sued at the Grand Red Line station as
they attempted to take him into custody
at the bottom of an escalator.
The video shows both officers firing
their Tasers at the man. Two gunshots

can be heard, but in the chaos it is not
clear which officer is shooting. Police said
one of the officers shot the man twice.
“I have viewed the widely shared
footage depicting the police-involved
shooting at the CTA station,” Lightfoot
said. “With the strong caveat that one
perspective does not depict the entirety
of the incident, the video is extremely
disturbing and the actions by these offi-
cers are deeply concerning.”
Hours earlier, the city unveiled its
plan to ensure the safety of the transit
system. Four detectives and a crime
analyst will have the ability to monitor
in real time more than 32,000 cameras
on all trains and buses, in stations and
elsewhere.

Students at an Oklahoma City high
school were made to line up by skin
color and hair texture by a college re-
cruiter who has since been fired.
Eleventh grade students at Harding
Charter Preparatory High School told
KFOR-TV the recruiter from Oklahoma
Christian University visited Monday
and, during a gathering at the gym,
first asked them to line up from dark-
est to lightest skin. After dispersing
that line, he had them stand based on
their hair.
“He told us to line up nappiest hair
in the back and straightest hair in the
front,” junior student Rio Brown said in
an interview with the Oklahoma City
station.
“That’s when I felt uncomfortable,”
classmate Korey Todd said. “I was like,
‘OK, I don’t think this is right.’ ”
Both the university and the high
school acknowledged in statements to

the station that the incident took place.
“OC admissions leadership did not
approve the inappropriate activity in
advance and has communicated closely
with Harding administration since the
visit,” said the university’s statement,
which noted that the admissions coun-
selor is no longer employed there.
OCU also said its representatives

would stop by Harding on Monday to
apologize to students.
Harding Charter Prep, ranked by U.S.
News & World Report as Oklahoma’s top
public high school in 2019, has an eth-
nically diverse student body of about
430.
According to the school’s website,
the demographic breakdown last year
was 28% African American, 28% His-
panic, 23% Caucasian, 7% Asian and
14% other.
The name of the recruiter has not
been made public, though Todd said
he was a white male who portrayed his
unusual requests to students as a
game.
Brown said teachers left the assem-
bly in tears because they were offended.
“I hope it is a wake-up call because
many people at the school need to hear
how we feel,” he said.
The incident is the latest in a recent
series of racially charged episodes at
Oklahoma learning institutions. In Feb-
ruary, a University of Oklahoma history
professor repeatedly used the N-word
while reading from a historical docu-
ment in class.
