games! My view has always
been that the key to YouTube is
to firstly be passionate about
what you play. If you really
enjoy it, it will come across
to the viewers. Secondly, you
need to be able to stand out
from the crowd. Ask yourself;
“why would someone watch
me?”

WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT
DO YOU NEED TO GET
STARTED?
When I made my first Trials
video, I put my phone on
a box and pointed it at the
screen. It wasn’t pretty, but it

proved what I was doing could
work. So you can start small
to test your ideas and if they
are worthwhile, then consider
improving what you use. At
this point the first thing you
need is a good microphone
as it makes you sound
professional. Then you get a
video capture device and a
webcam. Finally good lighting.

For those starting out,
I recommend the Open
Broadcasting Software (OBS)
as it will let you create a scene
with gameplay, webcam and
microphone, and record it in

one session. Video editing
is something that will take
longer to learn, so if you
just want to quickly capture
yourself, this is what I would
use.

WHAT KIND OF TRIALS
CONTENT IS THE MOST
FUN TO MAKE AND WHY?
People will respond to
the energy you bring so I
try to only make content
about things I truly enjoy.
So sometimes it’ll be me
teaching a lesson, other
times going for a personal
best or interviewing
interesting people in the Trials
community. I find that variety,
even when focussed on one
game, is key.

AFTER MAKING SO
MANY COOL VIDEOS, THE
DEVELOPER OF TRIALS
ACTUALLY GOT YOU
INVOLVED WITH MAKING
THE SERIES. HOW
AWESOME WAS THAT?
That was incredible. I had
been making Trials videos
for about three years, but
had never worked on a game
before, so it was a new
experience. It was very hard
work, but I would do it again
tomorrow if they asked me.

I had some strong ideas
about how the tutorials could
be improved. I provided
input on the design of the
tutorials, the level design,
and I wrote the scripts and
did the voiceovers in game.
Plus my YouTube channel, the
University of Trials, has a real
place within the game.

IF YOU WERE IN
COMPLETE CONTROL OF
TRIALS, WHAT WOULD
YOU ADD OR DO IN THE
NEXT GAME?
I have always asked for a
unicycle, but so far they
haven’t listened to me! If
they gave me control, I would
have every crazy bike I could
imagine, mostly for the fun
and challenge of playing
them in multiplayer.
