There are several
ways to convert
to black and white in
Photoshop, and there are
no right or wrong ways. But
our favorite is the black and
white toolset in Camera Raw
(or in Lightroom’s Develop
Module). After opening an
image into Camera Raw (or,
if in Photoshop, using Filter
> Camera Raw Filter) the
first thing to do is choose a
monochrome profile. If it’s a
raw image, you can use the
dedicated Adobe Raw profile;
if it’s a JPEG, experiment with
the B&W Profile set.

can fine-tune the conversion
by tweaking the brightness of
eight different color ranges.
When you’re satisfied with
the black and white mix, finish
off the effect by selectively
lightening and darkening the
image with the Camera Raw
Adjustment Brush.
