a level of concern that people are
getting excited about a different game
to the one they’re actually making.
This won’t be what people would
consider a triple-A game. It will be a
much more condensed affair, simply
because Obsidian doesn’t have the
kind of time and budget to be able to
make a sprawling RPG like Fallout.
That’s not to say that The Outer
Worlds won’t be rich in content.
The developers have made sure
to make the most of what they’ve
got with diverse branches in the
narrative, character customisation
and progression, large locations that
you can explore and many different
characters to meet and interact with.
All of which will be loaded with the
developer’s signature dark humour.
Galaxy quest
You play as a player-made colonist,
who has arrived at the edge of
the galaxy some 70 years behind
schedule. You’ve been thawed out
by an eccentric scientist, after being
stuck in cryostasis, to find yourself
in the midst of a huge conspiracy
involving megacorporations and the
citizens that live out in this neck
of the woods. You’re then tasked
with heading out to save your fellow
colonists. You’ll also meet multiple
companion characters that come
complete with their own stories.
How the game plays out is up to
you. Instead of helping the scientist
that woke you up, you can hand him in
to the authorities and claim a reward.
You can even kill him, or anyone else
in the game for that matter – the
choice is yours.
This is where the game achieves its
longevity. By featuring multiple paths
and a bunch of different endings,
you’ll be wanting to play the game
multiple times to experience the story
in different ways.
We’re excited about the prospect of
playing a detailed RPG that we might
have the time to actually complete.
We’ll have more information on The
Outer Worlds in our next issue. Q
All eyes seem to be fixed on The Outer
Worlds right now. From its initial reveal
at The Game Awards, to discovering
that Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky –
key developers of the original Fallout
games – are behind the creation of it,
people have become rather excited,
ourselves included.
Compound this with the fact that
a large chunk of people had been
somewhat stung with Fallout 76,
people are crying out for the next
big role-playing game. The hype is
certainly mounting up, but that’s
precisely what the developers don’t
want. During an interview with Game
Informer both Cain and Boyarsky
explained that although they’re
extremely happy that people are
excited to play their game, there is
