story
Thirty-five years ago, Ross Hoddinott’s
family moved to a former farm in a quiet
corner of Cornwall and dedicated the
land to wildlife. Today, a habitat is
flourishing where fields once stood.
Ross was seven when his family
moved to Cornwall. He vividly
remembers helping to plant the
trees that his own children now
climb. Today, 2.5ha of empty
fields have been transformed
into a mosaic of mixed woodland,
wildflower meadows, ponds and
vegetated banks, a wildlife oasis
amid the sea of surrounding
farmland. “I recall as a child
finding a single early purple
orchid (pictured) in bloom, a
remnant from years gone by,”
says Ross. “Over the years, we've
carefully cleared the area around
it – now more than 100 of these
flowers bloom each spring.”
