From Start to Finnish is an international showcase of Finland’s performing arts. Helsinki-based Tino Nyman
was briefed to create a distinctly Finnish visual identity that “stands out from the crowd” at the Edinburgh
Festival Fringe. The branding and logo are inspired by traditional theatre aesthetics with a contemporary
twist to enhance approachability.
“Classic and high-contrast subtle letters have been simplified to have more organic and experimental
forms,” says Tino of the logo. Typeface Thoreau Display, by Juuso Salakka, is used for the logo and headlines,
with Hiragino for body copy. Both are united by their union of sharpness, modernity, tradition and organic
details. The identity’s rounded, abstract graphic elements look to rock and lake shapes, inspired by Finland’s
“Land of Thousand Lakes” descriptor. They were designed to complement the “black-and-white and text-
rich” identity, says Tino. Theatre is expressed through mask imagery and nods to movement and light.
