1
Cut your stitched piece
leaving a 1.5cm (½in)
border all around the design.
2
Cut two panels of backing
fabric measuring 37x5cm
(14½x2in) and pin to either
side of the stitched piece,
with right sides facing. Sew
with a 1cm (¼in) seam
allowance. Press seams open.
Cut two more panels of fabric
measuring 35x5cm (13¾x2in)
for the top and bottom. Pin
and sew as before.
3
Cut a piece of backing
fabric the same size as
your entire front panel. Place
the two pieces together
with right sides facing. Stitch
around the edges using a
1cm (¼in) seam, leaving a
5cm (2in) gap at the top
edge. Turn through to the
right side and press, slip
stitching the gap closed.
4
To make a tab for the
dowel rod, cut a strip of
fabric measuring 7x15cm
(2¾x6in). With right sides
facing, fold in half lengthways
and sew around the raw
edges with a 1cm (¼in)
seam, leaving a small gap for
turning. Turn through to the
right side, slip stitch the gap
closed and press. Repeat to
make a second tab.
5
Fold the first tab in half
over the top edge of the
hanging, positioned 4cm
(1½in) in from the side. Pin in
place. Repeat for other tab.
6
Stitch a large button to
the centre of each tab,
making sure that you sew
through all the layers to
secure the tab in place. Insert
a dowel rod through the tabs.
Attach a length of ribbon to
the dowel rod for hanging.
How to make a hanging
Farmyard hanging
“Half cross stitch is used for the grassy
patches where the animals graze.
It helps these areas blend into the
background, giving a less dense
covering of the fabric.”
