he assassination of Julius

Caesar on the Ides of

March in 44BC triggered a

long power struggle that

brought an end to the

Roman Republic and ushered in the

Roman Empire. Writers of the time

described an unusually cold climate,

crop failures, famine and disease,

and historians have long suspected

that a volcanic eruption caused the

unusually cold conditions.

A team of scientists and historians

recently discovered that the Okmok

volcano in the remote Aleutian

islands of Alaska had a colossal

eruption around this time. It was the

largest volcanic eruption in the

northern hemisphere in the past

2,500 years and left a giant crater

six miles wide. They discovered

clues for this mega-eruption from

the fallout of sulphur and volcanic

ash frozen in Arctic ice, which bore

the telltale fingerprint of Okmok.

This volcanic debris had been shot

into the stratosphere, where it

spread far and wide, screening much

of the sun’s energy from reaching

the Earth’s surface. The growth rings

in trees revealed the eruption was

followed by one of the coldest

decades on record. According to the

study published in Proceedings of

the National Academy of Sciences

[bit.ly/3g0Hxib], summer and

autumn grew so cold that average

temperatures may have dropped by

as much as 7C and heavy rain

drenched the Mediterranean region.

Roman commentators painted a

grim picture and the biographer

Plutarch wrote that Mark Antony’s

army faced famine in 43BC and had

to eat wild fruit, roots and bark.

“In the Mediterranean region,

these wet and extremely cold

conditions during the agriculturally

important spring through autumn

seasons probably reduced crop

yields and compounded supply

problems during the ongoing

political upheavals,” Andrew

Wilson, a classical archaeologist at

the University of Oxford, said.

The Roman Republic was already

in a fragile state before the eruption,

riven by political and economic

troubles, but the eruption of Okmok

may well have sealed its fate.
