CREEPY
CRAWLY
DO THIS: Move your eyes over these caterpillars
and watch them wiggle left and right.
WHAT’S UP: The caterpillars aren’t stacked
perfectly, one above the other. But your brain wants
them to look neat, so it makes the caterpillars “creep”
into line. The effect is increased by the shadows, which
point away from the caterpillars’ heads.
DO THIS: Shift your
eyes around this grid
and watch as the dots
change from gray to
white to gray again.
WHAT’S UP: Looking
at one dot shows that
it’s white. But when you
look slightly to the side,
your brain saves time
and effort by guessing
that the gray lines con-
tinue through the dot.
So the dot looks gray
too, even though it’s
actually white.
