Remortoworkforthemanddesigntheirracebikes.
Thefirstroad-goingfourwastheinfamous 600
tourerthatonlyeversoldinsmallnumbersduetoits
seriouslystrangeappearance–itwasnicknamed
TheBlackPig!EverysubsequentfourcylinderMV
carriesfacetsofboththe 600 andtheracebikes
alongwithsomeunusualdesignfoibles.Most
obviousisthecar-typedistributorbehindthefour
individualcylinders,whicheachhavetobeshimmed
tothesameheightinordertomateproperlywiththe


one- ppiece cyylinder head.Not so obvious is the
crankshaftlocation,whichutilisescarrierblocksthat
hangdownfromtheuppersectionofthehorizontally
splitcrankcases.Thelowerhalfofthecrankcaseis,
toallintentsandpurposes,littlemorethanan
oil-tightlowercover-cum-sump.
Inessence,theengineisarace-shopmotor
modifiedjustsufficientlyforittobeusedasaroad
machine.Therefore,there’snoalternatorontheend
ofthecrankaspermostearlyJapanesefours.
