easytoworkout(ifnotcompletely
obvious)thatthewheelsshouldlieonthe
centre-lineandthattheyarecentrally
spacedintheforksandswingarm,sothat
wasmyfirstpointofreference.
ThefrontwheelwasfromaBandit 1200
inGSX-R 600 K 6 forks;Iwantedthelook
ofDymags,butwithouttheprice!My
thoughtwasthatlateronIcouldseehow
thebudgetwasworkingoutandupgradeif
financesallowed.Awheelspindleofthe
correctdiameterwasmadeuptofitthe
Banditwheelbearings,thenspacersmade
toslipoverthespindleandfittheforks.
Theright-handsidespacerdictatesthe
fitmentsoImadethisslightlylongerthan
required.Withthewheelintheforksand
supportedcorrectlyIcouldthenmeasure
fromtheinsideoftheforkstotherim.A
coupleofthingstoremember:don’t
measureoffatyre,theycanhavealotof
varianceovertheircircumferenceandwe
aretryingtogetgoodtolerances.Also
checktherimforanybucklesside-to-side.
Thiscanbedonebysecurelymountinga
dialgaugesoitdoesn’tmove,withthe
pointerontherim.Byrotatingthewheel
anyrunoutside-to-sidecanbemeasured.
Withthewheelmountedthedistance
betweentherimandforklegs,leftand
right,couldbemeasured,rememberingto
‘push’thewheeluphardtotheright-hand
side.Theright-handspacerwasreduced
untilthemeasurementwasthesameboth
sides.Theleft-handspacerwasthen
trimmedtofit.Tricky,buttimetakenand
theoldadage,measure 10 timescutonce,
holdstrue.It’salsoimportanttomakesure
anymeasurementsaretakeninthesame
placeandarestraight.Measuringonan
angle,unlessyoucanrepeataccurately
theanglewillgiveavariance,andthat’s
notwhat’swanted.
Somethingthatbecameapparentwas
thefrontdiscs.Ididn’thaveany,butwhat
wasclearwasthattherewasquitea
differenceinwheretheyweregoingtolay
andtheradialcallipers’positiononthe
frontforks.Itwouldnecessitatesome
spacersmachiningup,whichwasnot
insurmountable:ajobforlateron,though.
Awordonequipment.Buythebestyou
canafford.However,andIcanhearthe
groansfromsomequarters,someofthe
cheapstuffworksok.Theaboverequireda
dialgauge,Verniercallipersandasteel
rule(andalathe,butmoreonthatata
laterdate).I’veadigitalVernierbought
fromAldiacoupleofyearsago(other
supermarketsareavailable)forabouteight
quid.Iuseitalot.Icheckitagainstsome
betteronesIhaveanditreadstrue.IamSimple solutions:Keepalltoolsandmachineryintip-topcondition.
