contract. Zach Grossack of the

USA (representing team Lebowitz)

bid 5 ♣on three small cards and

didn’t double 5 ♦. In fact one could

say, a tad cruelly, that if he was

going to bid 5 ♣, he was right not to

double 5 ♦.

At Table One, Alon Birman (of

Israel) led the ace of clubs and,

dummy out of clubs, switched to

the ten of hearts. Declarer won the

king and led a diamond to the

queen but East won the ace and

switched to the ten of spades. It was

no surprise to him that West ruffed

— he knew West held 11 cards

between hearts and clubs. After

ruffing, West had no hesitation in

leading a second heart, East ruffing.

That was two down and E-W +500.
