preading volcanic rock dust

on farmland sounds a highly

unlikely way to help to

combat climate change, but

studies show crushed rocks

can soak up carbon dioxide from the

air, and as an added benefit may also

boost crop yields.

Volcanic basalt rock is one of the

most common rocks in the world. As

the rock weathers naturally it

absorbs carbon dioxide, turns into

carbonate that eventually ends up as

limestone and permanently locks

away the carbon. Grinding the rock

up into dust simply increases its

surface area and accelerates the

natural process of absorbing CO 2.

This power of rock dust has long

been known but University of

Sheffield scientists have now looked

into how realistic it could work in

practice. A team led by David

Beerling examined the climates and

cropland area of many countries and

suggested that spreading rock dust

on fields could remove up to 2 billion

tonnes (2 gigatonnes) of CO 2 each

year, potentially saving up to 12 per

cent of the world’s carbon budget,

the equivalent of more than all the

current total emissions of CO 2 from

world aviation and shipping.

Rock dust is produced as a waste

product in many mines and in the

construction industry, and these

waste materials are usually used as

low-value aggregate.

Many farmers already spread

crushed limestone dust on to fields

to improve the pH of the soil, so

spreading basalt rock dust would be

straightforward. Basalt also helps to

get rid of acidification in soils and

contains essential plant nutrients

such as calcium, magnesium and

potassium.

The study, published in Nature,

noted that adding the dust for fields

could increase yields of the cereal

crop sorghum by as much as 20 per

cent, reducing the need for

agricultural lime and fertilisers.

However, rock dust is only

meant to help the fight against

climate change — the burning of

fossil fuels worldwide produces

about 35 gigatonnes of CO 2 each

year, so reducing fossil fuel use is

still needed.
