he summer of 200 years

ago began cold, wet and

miserable, but at the end of

June temperatures soared

in a sustained heatwave

and violent storms broke out.

On this day, July 31, 1820, a

powerful hailstorm carved a ten-

mile trail of destruction between the

villages of Sible Hedingham and

Belchamp St Paul in Essex. “We

were at Hedingham yesterday: it is

really quite distressing to witness

the devastation there,” wrote a

correspondent to The Gentleman’s

Magazine. “The injury done in the

two parishes to the crops, &c. could

not be repaired by many thousands

of pounds. The hops are stripped off

the poles as if they had been cut

with scissors. The hail was larger

than was ever known. A friend of

mine picked up a solid piece of ice

eighteen inches long and six broad

yesterday morning; it had made a

deep hole in the ground.”

That same day another hailstorm

pummelled Maidstone in Kent,

“trees were torn up, and great injury

was done”, reported The Gentleman’s

Magazine. At Worthing on the West

Sussex coast “the hail and rain

descending in torrents completely

deluged the whole town. The hail-

stones were particularly large, and

fell with such force and velocity as

to demolish the windows in many

houses. So great was the devastation

among the feathered tribe, that in

the morning about 2,000 sparrows

were picked up dead in the streets.”

In June that year another violent

hailstorm had devastated a swathe

of northwest Wales. “Some of the

hailstones measured nearly eight

inches in circumference. They were

round masses of solid ice, mostly of

an oval form; but some were of an

irregular and angular shape... The

damage sustained by the farmers in

their corn and hay crops, potatoes,

etc is incalculable,” reported The

London Gazette. “A strong pig, many

sheep, lambs and a considerable

number of geese have been killed.

Several grown persons and children

have had severe contusions.”

Large and strangely shaped

hailstones have been reported at

other times, but remain a mystery.
