For a quarter of a century, Luigi

Molinaro, owner of Luigi’s Italian

Delicatessen, has been striding

into the ARBC and wowing with

his brilliant card-play and imagi-

native bidding. He wins many of

our ladders — including the Luigi’s

Deli Ladder — so that his hamper

prize usually goes to the second-

placed finisher.

I loved Luigi’s declarer-play on

today’s deal from a Monday after-

noon duplicate (pre-virus). West

yy

led the ace of hearts and declarer

dropped the ten. West now contin-

ued with the king of hearts, and

Luigi dropped the queen.

If declarer had followed with

the eight and ten of hearts, East

would have ruffed the third heart

and switched to a spade, and

declarer would now no longer be

able to succeed. However, after

declarer had followed with the ten-

then-queen, at trick three West led

the jack of hearts, and East natu-

rally saw no reason to ruff.

West was unable to attack

spades from his side — switch to

the king, and declarer wins the ace

and can lead towards dummy’s

jack. In practice, West exited safely

with a club. It still appears declarer

must lose two spade tricks ....

However, declarer won the ace

of clubs (overtaking dummy’s jack)

and led the queen of diamonds.

West covered with the king, and

he won dummy’s ace. He ruffed a

diamond, crossed to the queen of

clubs (noting the 2-2 split) and

ruffed a third diamond, crucially

stripping West of diamonds.

At trick nine, declarer exited

with a low spade towards dummy’s

jack. West rose with the queen but

had no good play. A second spade

would promote dummy’s jack; a

fourth heart would allow declarer

to ruff in dummy and shed his

remaining spade from hand. Nine

tricks and doubled game made.

West should have more shape, something

like a 4♠ 6 ♥ 2 ♦ 1 ♣ shape. However, Luigi

so often bids on “tram tickets”, there is

always a great risk he is stealing.

(2) Without a single defensive trick, East

should really bid. Whether he chooses 3♥

or 3 ♠ is another matter — indeed perhaps

he should bid 3 ♦, not minding whether

partner interprets it as natural, or pick a

major. Doubtless East was also affected by

the Luigi factor — that he could be some-

what sub-standard for his bidding.
