massandlightwithoutequalthatneverfailstofill
mewithawe.Everyencounterleavesmeexhilarated
buthumbled,knowingthatI continuetolearnfrom
thisplaceeachtimeI visit.I remembertakingmy
eldersononesummerholiday,whenhewasfouror
five.Hebeganrunningupanddownandanelderly
touristtoldhimtobequiet,buta priestadmonished
theman,sayingtheboyshouldbeallowedtobe
himself.I thinkheunderstoodthat,asa child, you
feel the charge of that space viscerally.

overlookingthecity.I’vebeena hugefanofBurges
sinceI wasa childandmyfatherusedtoraveabout
hisworkandthefascinatingMarquessofBute,
Burges’patron.Theroomhasa themeofprecious
stones,andlittlepolishedspecimensfromLord
Bute’sminesaresetintothechimneyhood.I love
Burges’workbecausehewaseccentric,passionate
andinspiredbyhistory.Hemaderoomsthattold
