(^50) FREAK OUT
FAST ON FOUR LEGS RUBIK CUBE
GENIUS
The Cubinator holds the Guinness world record
for fastest machine solve of a Rubik’s cube. The
‘bot can accept a cube from a (mere) human
and lift it to eye level where Webcams detect
the colours on the cube and work out how to
solve the puzzle in the fewest moves. It takes
The Cubinator about 25 seconds to complete the
cube and it also has a sense of humour, shouting
“Oh dear!” when it occasionally drops it. Pete
Redmond developed the robot for the final project
of his Master’s degree.
Able to run 45km/hr, the Cheetah Robot is one
of the the world’s fastest four-legged robot and
even outpaces Olympic 100m sprint gold medallist
Usain Bolt’s top speed of 44.7km/h. So if it could
chase down the world’s fastest man, what chance
do you have? The 2012-built version runs on a
high-speed laboratory treadmill but testing on an
outdoor version has begun. The ’bot is funded by
the Pentagon for emergency response and
defence missions.
If you think C-3PO and R2-D2 from Star Wars are cool, wait till
you see what these ’bots can do...
