choice
RESIDENT EVIL 2
It may have only
lasted 30 minutes,
but the demo of RE2
was the highlight for me. Fans of
the PlayStation original will feel at
home retracing their steps through
the RC Police Dept, but this modern
take will offer up plenty of variation.

RESIDENT EVIL 2
Resi’s dominated my
gaming landscape
this past month and
after reviewing the new Resident
Evil 2 remake, I couldn’t stop. I’ve
now set it upon myself to chase the
fastest time possible as Hunk in the
4th Survivor bonus mode.

LUTHER S5
FOR FANS OF Hard Sun, Batman
Season five is a treat, with stories that feel
plucked from the pages of gruesome pulp
fiction, a serial killer who removes their
victims’ eyes and tongues, and a scene
that will make you scared of buses. This
plus Idris Elba’s laconic swagger.
BLACK MIRROR:
BANDERSNATCH
FOR FANS OF Donnie Darko, Looper
This felt more like a standalone film than
an TV episode. And how groundbreaking it
is. Taking inspiration from vintage Choose
Your Own Adventure games, viewers control
the narrative and explore diverging paths.
TITANS
FOR FANS OF Runaways, Cloak & Dagger
Want a bit more of the Batman universe, but
sick of Gotham’s drawn-out origin story?
Your answer is Titans, the moody new
superhero show which sees a damaged Dick
Grayson join forces with Starfire, Raven and
Beast Boy to form a punk group of heroes.
PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING
FOR FANS OF Transformers
No, Uprising isn’t as good as the first
Pacific Rim! But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a
lot of fun. John Boyega steps in as the son
of Stacker Pentecost, reluctantly thrown
into the fray to lead a young generation of
pilots against a second wave of Kaiju.
STAR TREK:
DISCOVERY S2
FOR FANS OF Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars
We’ve been waiting patiently for the
second season of Discovery, aka the best
series of 2016, and now it’s here. We can’t
wait to catch up with Michael, Saru, Tilly
and co as they meet the Enterprise crew.
FUNNY COW
FOR FANS OF Little Voice, This Is England
The utterly brilliant Maxine Peake stars as
an aspiring comedienne in this British film.
Exploring the male-dominated comedy club
circuits of 1970s Britain, the film shows us
just how harrowing it was for women trying
to break into this space.
SEX EDUCATION
FOR FANS OF Wanderlust, Easy A
Come for Gillian Anderson, stay for the
hilarious tale of teens trying to navigate the
world of sex for the first time. Asa Butterfield
stars as the insecure son of an eccentric
sex therapist, who begins counselling his
school friends as they hurtle into puberty.
GHOST STORIES
FOR FANS OF Inside No 9, The Woman In Black
This spooky anthology often feels like a
tribute to the stories read in hushed tones
around the fireplace, following Andy
Nyman’s ghost debunker as he’s pulled into
three stories of the supernatural. It makes
you jump at the smallest creak and sigh.
MY BRILLIANT FRIEND
FOR FANS OF Big Little Lies
HBO’s European drama is a gorgeous love
letter to Italy and the inner lives of young
women. Adapted from Elena Ferrante’s
Neapolitan Novels, this transports us back
in time to post-WWII Naples where two girls
develop a sacred, tumultuous bond.
RED SPARROW
FOR FANS OF Atomic Blonde
A trashy erotic thriller dressed up as
something more refined, Red Sparrow takes
itself a little too seriously. Jennifer Lawrence
throws herself into the role of a Russian
double agent, using feminine charms to
con men until *gasp* she falls in love.
TRUE DETECTIVE S3
FOR FANS OF Fargo, Breaking Bad
The iconic crime series goes back to its
roots for season three, starring Mahershala
Ali and Stephen Dorff as the detectives
who team up to find two missing children in
a backwater town. Green Room’s Jeremy
Saulnier helms this slice of the twisty noir.
HOW TO TALK TO
GIRLS AT PARTIES
FOR FANS OF Velvet Goldmine
Hedwig And The Angry Inch director John
Cameron Mitchell woos us once more with a
tale of music, melodrama and youth. Elle
Fanning is the alien girl who comes to Earth
and falls in love with an insecure teen boy.
R ussell’s
choice
BANDERSNATCH
Okay, so it’s not
strictly speaking a
videogame, but I
really enjoyed this Black Mirror ep.
Very clever indeed and I loved the
care that went into recreating the
era – that WH Smiths was bang on.
By the way, I chose Frosties.
