most of them
neversayaword.

he post-apocalyptic
survival shooter series,
based on the novels by
Dmitry Glukhovsky, has
previously been set in
the confines of the Moscow subway,
as survivors battle to survive in the
post-nuclear wasteland.
Protagonist Artyom and his wife
Anna leave the confines of the subway
after picking up a hopeful government
transmission from somewhere in the
Ural mountains. Their adventure takes
place over the course of a year so
you’ll see the seasons change as
events unfold. Immersion is key to the
Metroexperience, and with a lack of
HUD or any hand-holding, the devs
want you to feel as though you’re
organically a part of the world they’ve
created. This dangerous world is full of
mutants, and with a day/night cycle,
sometimes it’s advisable to travel at
night for reasons of stealth. Mind you,
you’re not going to want to meet some
of the game’s creatures in the dark...Q

T

e’ve seen a lot of cult
horror writer HP
Lovecraft in videogames
lately, what with last
year’s decentCall Of
Cthulhu, and the not so greatAchtung!
Cthulhutactics, but now here’s
another similarly 1920s-set
investigation/horror game. UnlikeCall
Of Cthulhu, which was a mostly linear
first-person investigation game with
some branching elements,The Sinking
Cityis played in third person and has a
more open-world feel to it, as your
character, a typically grizzled private
detective, investigates occult goings
on in a partially flooded city.
In the tradition of Lovecraft’s stories
such asShadow Over Innsmouth, the
fictional town of Oakmont is a strange,

W

remote coastal Massachusetts
location where the locals have been
mostly left to do things their own,
bizarre way, for centuries.
Investigation is one of the game’s
core pillars, and similarly to Call Of
Cthulhu, when you’re investigating
a crime scene, your uncanny
investigation ability enables you to
reconstruct events visually, to work
out just what transpired.
While the game doesn’t have the
official Chaosium licence of the other
game, from the Elder Sign and
statuette of Cthulhu evident in the
cinematic trailer, you can certainly
expect some fishy goings on involving
ol’ tentacle mush. Expect your sanity
to be tested, again, when the game
lands in March. Q

the seasons of
the post
apocalypse.
