Either way, I dare say you may have also
noticed that this ne hobby of ours can sure
take a chunk out of the ol’ wallet pretty fast.
But fear not! If you’re not too keen on having
to sell a kidney to let Mammon take his due
for your plastic crack, we have some simple
pointers to help keep your books in the black.1
PAINT IT BLACK
If you’re keen on having your miniatures
painted, you’re gonna need paints.
ere are quite a few di erent
ranges out there, and a veritable cornucopia
of di erent shades to choose from. However, it’s
always best to start with the basics – the rest is
really just fancy dressing. Your rst port of callshould be the primary colours (red, yellow and
blue) as well as black and white; at the end of the
day, all other shades in between can just be mixed
from these. A green, however, should also be one
of the basics. A metal colour, a normal esh tone
and a brown for leather are all recommended as
well, as these are all very common on miniatures.
Finally, if you’re feeling fancy and want to
shade your miniature (i.e. make the recesses
look darker) a black ink wash is an easy way to
do this. If an army has a predominant colour
besides those listed you may want to invest
in that too, though only if your budget
stretches to it.
As for ranges, Vallejo’s Army Painter series
is marginally cheaper than Games Workshop’s
Citadel line, though at the end of the day,
