Sam Tomkins, the Catalans Dragons
and England full back, has called for
stricter social-distancing rules to be
imposed on Super League players to
avoid the season being potentially
derailed.
Six members of Hull FC’s squad
and two coaching staff tested positive
for Covid-19 after last Sunday’s match
against Salford Red Devils, with five
of those having played in that fixture.
Matches involving Hull and Salford,
scheduled for this weekend, have
subsequently been postponed with
both squads having been stood down.
The outbreak at Hull was another
blow to the Super League — which
returned to action this month after
being suspended in March — after
cash-strapped Toronto Wolfpack’s
withdrawal from the competition.
There have been calls for an
increase in testing from once to twice
a week, as is the case in the Premier
League, EFL and Premiership rugby
union. Yet Tomkins feels that more
stringent guidelines for players are
required to prevent a spread of

Tomkins: Get strict or lose season

coronavirus throughout Super
League. The 31-year-old pointed to
the conditions in place in Australia’s
National Rugby League (NRL), where
players are barred from visiting
restaurants, cafés and bars.
The NRL recently fined some of
the biggest names in the game,
including Wayne Bennett, the South
Sydney Rabbitohs coach, after they
were found to have breached
Covid-19 biosecurity protocols.
“Testing twice a week would
help but I’d also like to see a
similar blueprint to the
NRL, where players are
forced to isolate as
much as possible,”
Tomkins, who will
return for Catalans in
today’s match against
Wakefield Trinity,
said. “There are
hefty fines for
NRL players
who breach the
guidelines and it would be
sensible to do that in Super
League. Everyone wants the

season to carry on and finish with
the Grand Final. For that to
happen, we are all going to
have to make more sacrifices.
“In Super League, everyone
is just doing what the
government is saying — you can go
to restaurants and meet people in
pubs and cafés. Therefore people
are going to do it.”
Adam Pearson, the Hull FC owner,
believes that a player visiting his
unwell baby in hospital last week led
to him contracting the virus before
passing it to team-mates. “As rugby

players we are in exceptional
circumstances because we are in such
close contact throughout the week in
training,” Tomkins said.
“One person at Hull has got
coronavirus and eight people in the
organisation now have it. That just
proves it is very easy to pass it on, so I
believe there should be some extra
measures. We all want to keep playing
and paying the bills, but if we
continue getting positive tests then it
won’t be long before wages are cut
and people are losing jobs.”
Tomkins and his Perpignan-based
team-mates have been living in
similar conditions to the UK in terms
of social distancing. Catalans’ ability
to host matches and continue
travelling to England to play will not
be affected by the country being
added to the quarantine list.
With Toronto, Hull and Salford
absent, there will be a scaled-down
fixture list at St Helens this weekend,
with double-headers on both days
and all four matches live on Sky. The
Super League clubs are attempting to
complete the season and, crucially,
fulfil their broadcast obligations to
Sky, with the Grand Final scheduled
for November 28 at Old Trafford.

HERO

of the week

He Knows No Fear
300-1 horse

Who doesn’t love an underdog?
In a world where powerhouse
trainers such as Aidan O’Brien
and John Gosden seem to be
sweeping up more prizes than
ever, it was heartening to see He
Knows No Fear, a 300-1 shot, win
at Leopardstown on Thursday —
and, in doing so, become the
biggest-price winner since
records began.
As the odds suggest, the three-
year-old colt was an unlikely
hero: the product of an unproven
stallion and a largely
underwhelming broodmare;
trained by a man without a Flat
winner in nine years; a distant
12th on his only previous visit to
the racecourse, at Limerick last
month.
“We had a few quid on him at
Limerick but he broke badly,” Jim
Gorman, racing manager to the
winning owner and trainer, Luke
Comer, said, explaining why they
did not back the horse on this
occasion.
However, Alan Mulligan, a
stable lad who works at Comer’s
yard in Co Meath, did manage to
cash in. He put €100 (about £90)
each way on He Knows No Fear
with Ladbrokes, won €36,
and is planning a lavish holiday
when the coronavirus crisis is
over.
“I’d be going to a travel agent
this evening if I could,” he told
the Daily Mirror after the race.
“There will be a bottle of
champagne drunk tonight. I’m
ecstatic, to be honest — on cloud
nine.”

British record books rewritten
at Monaco’s Diamond League

Tomkins wants more isolation
among players

Despite a summer drought
in competition caused by
the coronavirus and
worldwide lockdowns that
have prevented them from
training, athletes recorded
impressively fast times at
the Diamond League in
Monaco last night, including
a world record in the men’s
5,000m and a British record
for Laura Muir (Rebecca
Myers writes).
Muir beat Kelly Holmes’s
record in coming second to
Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon in
the 1,000m, while Britons
Laura Weightman and Jake
Wightman also challenged
two bastions of the national
record books, Paula
Radcliffe and Mo Farah,
with personal best times,
placing them both second
in the national all-time
rankings.
There was also a second-
place finish for Andrew
Pozzi in the hurdles, with a
personal best time. The
world record in the 5,000m
was broken by Ugandan
Joshua Cheptegei, 16 years
after it was set.

There were
disappointments, however,
for Adam Gemili and
Katarina Johnson-
Thompson. The former, who
finished fourth at the World
Championships in Doha last
year, came fourth again in
the men’s 200m with a
time of 20.68sec. Noah
Lyles, 23, came first with a
world leading time of
19.76sec, while his younger
brother, Josephus, 22, came
second.
Johnson-Thompson, who
became world champion in
Doha last October, exited
the high jump after
failing three attempts at
1.88m.
At least two athletes were
unable to participate in the
event — the first to take
place after Diamond
League cancellations in
Eugene, London, Paris,
Rabat, Gateshead and
Shanghai — after testing
positive. One of them was
the reigning 3,000m
steeplechase Olympic
champion Conseslus
Kipruto.
