Production was tricky at first as any mention
of the word origami would put suppliers into the
headspace of 80gsm paper. We finally found a
company called Box & Seal, which understood
what we were trying to achieve. We avoided
using glue, opting instead for male/female
closure techniques to secure the box. Tape is
added to the box in transit for extra security.
The illustrations that bring the jetpack to
life followed the style developed for the brand
identity. The elements were inspired by the
creations of Wendell F Moore, inventor and jet
pack pioneer. We’ve also hidden a few moments
of joy in there – if you look closely, the features
on the rockets form a series of little faces.
Flexoprint was used to reproduce the imagery,
which is a dot-screen method that reduces the
amount of ink used.

THE VERDICT
By Sam Pittman
Our clients at Petit Pli love the packaging we
came up with because it integrates so tightly
with their brand.
There were lots of options that would have
been cheaper than their existing packaging,
which was a Toblerone-style cardboard
box costing £2 a unit. Many of these were
unsustainable. By creating a bespoke solution
there’s control at every stage of production to
ensure everything is sustainably sourced and
created. The simplicity of the new solution,
even though it’s not a standard cardboard box,
reduced the cost to 37p a unit. That’s an
82 per cent saving, and the box has a life
after the clothes have been unpacked.
I’ve loved working on this assignment. It’s
pushed us into the unknown, and it’s a project
that makes you smile.

The main brand typeface is Simplon
Mono, a choice inspired by the look
and feel of NASA objects. The core
palette is monochrome, to give
primacy to the colourful clothing
ranges, but as the brand is rolled
out, black and white will be used
alongside three-colour gradients
in graphic communications. These
include orange to dark orange, purple
to pink-red and blue to white.
