On Row 3, purl the irst stitch on the row, then
insert the right needle from front to back under
the horizontal bar or running thread between the
stitch you have just worked and the next stitch.
Knit into it to create a new stitch.ADD ONE MORE
Next, knit into the next horizontal bar or running
thread between the stitch you have just worked and
the next stitch as before. In total, you have created
ive stitches from one. Purl the next stitch.COMPLETE THE DECREASE
Knit the next three stitches together, then insert
the left needle into the stitch created from the
ssk. Lift this over the stitch created from the
k3tog and drop it of the right needle, reducing
the stitches from ive to one.REPEAT THE PATTERN
Continue with the 12 row pattern, working the
increases and decreases as shown above. On Row
9, the decreases are worked irst, which creates a
staggered efect. After a number of pattern repeats,
the full cocoon stitch pattern will become visible.KEEP INCREASING
Now, create three stitches from the next stitch.
Knit into the stitch, but leave it on your left needle.
Bring the yarn to the front of the work and purl into
the same stitch. Again, leaving it on the needle.
Return the yarn to to the back and knit the same
stitch, dropping it from the left needle.SLIP, SLIP, KNIT
Now, decrease the next ive stitches into one stitch.
Start by working an ssk by slipping each of the irst
two stitches knitwise, then returning them to the left
needle. Knit them together through the back loops.1

This deeply textured pattern can be used for all sorts of designs. There are many ways to
reduce from five stitches to one. Here I’ve used a combination of ssk and k3tog, which is easier
to work. The pattern starts on the wrong side of the work, and the first two rows use
