byfriendsSicgmone(aknitwear

designerandtextilelecturerattheUniversityof

theArtsLondon)andVea(FashionandInterior

StylistforBrantuoStudio).Theybothsharethe

creativedirectortitlefortheclub,whileSicgmone

teachesandleadstheirknitwearworkshopsand

VeaworksonbuildingtheBGKCbrand,creating

contentforthewebsiteaswell as managing their

socialmediaplatforms.

WHEREITALLBEGAN

ThemotivationforcreatingtheBGKCcamefrom

therecentsocialmediahashtag#diversknitty,

wheredierentknitweardesignerswerecalling

formorediversitywithintheknittingcommunity.

VeaandSicgmonecameupwiththeideaof

animportantnewgroup– a learningplatform

andinclusivespaceforblackwomentogather,

shareandinspireeachotherthrough uniting and

sharingskillsandcreativity.

ESSENTIALSKILLS

DespiteonlystartinginJanuary2019,the

responsetothenewclubhasbeenencouraging

andgreatlyreceived.Theclubhasalready

receiveda numberofgenerousdonationsof

knittingsuppliesfortheirinauguralevent and 17

members have eagerly joined up!

PLANSFORTHEFUTURE

TheBGKC’sgroupmembers’extensiveskills

aregratefullyreceivedateveryBGKCworkshop

session,andthegroupwillsoonbelaunching

theirownwebsite,toprovidecontentand

educationaltoolsforall.SicgmoneandVealove

toengagewiththecommunitybyvisitingschools

andclubs,andhavemanyexcitingprojectsin

thepipeline– inparticularaccessory-based

workshopsformembers,and socials!
