CAPTIVATING VOLCANIC VISTAS
If peering into a rumbling crater or
squeezing down a lava tube is your idea of
the perfect holiday, don’t make the mistake
of assuming you’ll need a long haul flight.
Take Iceland, where you’ll find national parks
such as Vatnajökull, home to the volcano-
filled Ódáðahraun desert, with its crater
lakes and frozen lava flows. This year, more
visitors than ever are expected to head to
Iceland’s north east, now more accessible
thanks to the Diamond Circle, a 250km
self-drive route that launched in August
and takes in remote, often-overlooked
landmarks such as the striking Ásbyrgi
canyon and Lake Mývatn.
Meanwhile, the Canary Islands aren’t just
brilliant for winter sun – they’re spectacular
reminders of the region’s history of
geothermal activity. Budding volcanologists
should make a beeline for the unique island
of Lanzarote, more specifically Timanfaya
National Park, where hiking routes weave
between craters and cinder cones. Visit El
Diablo Restaurant to dine on steak grilled
over a hole in the ground, cooked by a
volcano’s heat.
You’ll find Britain’s only natural thermal
spa in Bath, where it’s been easing aches
and pains since 863BC. When it reopens,
head to Thermae Bath Spa to soak in the
rooftop pool, filled with naturally warm,
mineral-rich waters.
Finally, if you’re looking ahead to 2021
and planning a bucket list trip to make up
for travel restrictions imposed earlier in the
year, consider Costa Rica, where you’ll find
hundreds of volcanic formations, some of
which are over sixty million years old. Arenal
Volcano is one of the country’s most active
volcanoes. We recommend kayaking across
the lake in its shadow, or satisfying your
need for speed by ziplining through the
rainforest at its base. Suddenly a soak in
a hot spa seems slightly tame.
