encouraged his older
brother Ben to check
himself out, something
that probably saved his
life: he discovered a
lump. This tender film
continues their story.
The recreated family
conversations about
cancer and fertility may
feel stilted at times, but
their good intentions
and importance of
their message is never
in doubt.

Me, My Brother

and Our Balls
BBC One, 9pm

When the former Love
Island contestant Chris
Hughes appeared on
ITV’s This Morning
in 2018 to have his
privates publicly
examined, millions
were impressed at his
courage in helping
to raise awareness of
testicular cancer. It also

absolutely grotesque.
He’s playing host to the
American porn kingpin
Tom Pain (Julian
Ovenden), a big name
with a questionable
reputation and
someone Jolene has
always refused to work
with. The laughs and
insights into some very
odd lives soon subside,
and this drama’s dark
and serious turn
feels appropriate.

Lucy Kirkwood has
researched her subject
thoroughly and has a
firm eye on what is also
seriously amiss in this
world. Amy is unhappy
about some of the
things she is being
asked to do on set and
her anxieties play on
Jolene’s mind. “She’s
fine,” says Carroll
Quinn, a porn producer
bigwig played by
Rupert Everett, looking

unavoidably funny
about her life,
especially when we see
Jolene squealing with
feigned delight while
running the night’s
shopping list through
her head. One cutaway
to a set of brightly
coloured dildos on a
draining board suggests
that we’re being invited
to laugh. Yet while she
has a sharp comic
touch, the scriptwriter

homespun remedies.
At home she’s a proud
breadwinner who loves
her husband and has
grown-up discussions
with her teenage
daughter. She also
happens to be a porn
star known as Jolene
Dollar, and this drama
can be explicit and
shocking. Jolene is
played with a deadpan
style by Hayley Squires,
and there is something
