Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.
Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.
From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

On today’s deal from an online
duplicate at andrewrobson.co.uk,
South was hardly expecting to
declare 5 ♣ when she picked up
her hand. She made it, too.
West led the queen of hearts,
declarer dropping a spade from
dummy as she won her ace. At
trick two, she led a diamond to
dummy’s queen.
East beat the queen of dia-
monds with the king, cashed the
ace of spades felling dummy’s king
and (not that it mattered) led the
g y
king of hearts. Declarer ruffed in
dummy and cashed the ace of dia-
monds, preparing to ruff a dia-
mond in hand.
When West’s jack of diamonds
fell under the ace, declarer could
draw trumps (without loss when
the jack fell) and run dummy’s
promoted diamonds. Eleven tricks
and game made.
Did anything strike you about
the defence (after the opening
yy
lead)? What if East ducks dummy’s
queen of diamonds (smoothly).
yy
Declarer will now cash the ace of
diamonds and will observe West’s
jack. She can now make her con-
tract if she draws trumps and con-
cedes a diamond to the king. But
will she?
Worried about clubs splitting 4-1,
won’t she ruff a third diamond,
playing for West to hold some-
thing like ♠Qx, ♥QJxxxxx,
♦KJx,♣x? Perhaps she shouldn’t,
arguing that West would play the
king of diamonds under the ace,
the card he was “known” to hold.
However, I think most declarers
would try to ruff a third diamond.
And now West can overruff the
eight of clubs with the jack and
return his second club, removing
declarer’s trumps and leaving her
with two losers to East, the king of
diamonds and ace of spades.
Would you have ducked
dummy’s queen of diamonds with
that East hand? You probably
should — you can see that win-
ning it with the king is not going to
generate three defensive tricks.
Easier with hindsight, of course.
The only winning defence “dou-
ble dummy” (ie with all 52 cards
y
on view) is an opening diamond
y
lead, say the jack. Declarer may
cover with dummy’s queen but
East ducks. Declarer may now
draw trumps and lead ace and ten
of diamonds. East wins the king,
exits passively with a fourth dia-
mond and, stuck in dummy,
declarer must lose two spade
tricks. She never scores her ace of
