Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
four or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.
How you rate 9 words, average;
13, good; 16, very good; 19, excellent

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

Boye Brogeland of Norway will go
down in history as the whistleblower
who, in 2015, called upon the expert
bridge community to rally together
and ostracise three or four pairs
who were (allegedly) collusively
cheating. Unfortunately the temp-
tation to cheat is apparently great
and the advent of all top-level
bridge being played online is result-
ing in fresh scandals. Shame.
Watch Brogeland play this 6♣
brilliantly from last month’s Minor
Alt Invitational I. Winning West’s
heart lead, at trick two he crossed
to the (jack and) ace of diamonds.
If clubs were 2-2, he would be able
to draw trumps, eliminate the
majors and throw in an opponent
with the second diamond — that
opponent would have needed to
unblock the king from king-low,
hence the early diamond play. He
ruffed a heart carefully with the
eight (to avoid blockage) then

yy

cashed the queen, his care rewarded
when West discarded.
Declarer led the nine (note) of
clubs to the ten and king, crossed
to the ace of spades (East playing
the ten) and led dummy’s carefully

y

retained four of clubs to his seven.
He cashed the ace of clubs (felling
East’s jack) and exited with a sec-
ond diamond.
East won the queen of dia-
monds and exited with a heart to
declarer’s ace. Declarer now led his
last club. West had to keep the
king of diamonds, so was squeezed
down to a singleton spade.
At trick 12, declarer led his sec-
ond spade to dummy’s ♠KJ.
Declarer knew West’s last card was
the king of diamonds (if East held

♦KQJ, he would have cashed the
king after winning the queen).
Finessing in spades was therefore
pointless. Declarer rose with the
king and was rewarded when
East’s queen appeared. He won the
last trick with dummy’s jack of
spades and that was slam made via
a lovely show-up squeeze.
The event was won (narrowly)

y

by team Gupta, including the leg-
endary Zia Mahmood.

(2) Loving his hand facing partner’s marked

( 4 ) Confirming all the aces and asking for
