winter. Osborne is predictably stylish in
the saddle but has also shown excellent
tactical awareness and has been look-
ing stronger as she has gained experi-
ence of race-riding.
She had to take a week off this month
after ending up in hospital — needing
five stitches — after being kicked by a

horse when riding out at home. She
returned to the saddle to ride Raising
Sand, trained by her father, on
Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday,
although the pair were well beaten.
She had stated that her intention was
to stop riding this year when she hit the
ten-winner mark. By doing that,

Osborne would be able to start next
season still able to claim a valuable 7lb
allowance off her mounts, with the aim
of having a crack at the apprentice title
next season.
It is to be hoped that she can bounce
back quickly as she is a rider of
immense potential.

Saffie Osborne, one of the apprentice

finds of the season, narrowly escaped

serious injury after a horrible-looking

fall at Windsor yesterday.

Osborne, 18, lives with her father,

Jamie, the former top jump jockey

turned trainer, at his stables in Lam-

bourn, Berkshire. She fell after her

mount, Zeyzoun, clipped the heels of

Maykir and came down after about

two furlongs of the mile contest.

Zeyzoun was tracking the leaders

when coming to grief. As a result,

Osborne then had the majority of

the 13-strong field coming past her

and appeared to take a kick from

another horse.

She was taken to hospital

but her father gave a positive

update as to her condition

last night on Twitter.

“With an immeasurable

sense of relief, I can report

that @OsborneSaffie is

going to be fine,” he said.

“Katie [Saffie’s mother]

and I thank you all for your

concern and kind words.”

The stewards held an

inquiry into the incident and her fellow
apprentice Marco Ghiani, who was
riding Maykir, was found guilty of care-
less riding and handed a ten-day ban.
The stewards’ report said: “Ghiani
was suspended for ten days for careless
riding as he had manoeuvred right-
handed towards the rail when
insufficiently clear, causing Zeyzoun to
clip heels and unseat Osborne.”
Osborne had earlier landed a
ninth success of her maiden
season on board Pettochside.
She has been viewed by
many as potentially the next
female rider to break through
to a higher level.
She had already enjoyed
enormous success in eventing,
which she still competes in.
Osborne won an individual
and team gold medal at
European level in ponies
in 2018 and a team silver
in the juniors in 2019.
Before starting to ride
in races, she gained
valuable experience dur-
ing a four-month stint at
Aidan O’Brien’s stables
in Ireland before
spending three weeks
working for the top
Australian trainer
Gai Waterhouse last

Women worse off during pandemic

Women have been hit harder financial-

ly than men during the Covid-19

pandemic, according to research into

athletes’ wellbeing.

The study, conducted by Stanford

University and Strava, the world’s big-

gest online sports community, found

that 54 per cent of professional female

athletes had seen a cut in paid sponsor-

ship opportunities compared with only

44 per cent of their male counterparts.

Elinor Barker, the 2016 Olympic gold

medal-winning track cyclist and a

five-times world champion, said: “It

shouldn’t be such a big gap — 10 per
cent is huge.”
The study also found that 71 per cent
of athletes worried about their income
from sport under Covid-19 restrictions.
There were also a significant number
whose mental health had been affected.
— 28 per cent of athletes had suffered
from anxiety during the pandemic,
with 22.5 per cent feeling depressed or
down. The study surveyed 131 sports-
people, mainly track and field athletes,
cyclists and triathletes.
Dr Michael Fredericson, a Stanford
professor and the study’s senior author,
said: “We now have clear evidence of

the toll this is taking on their mental
health. Uncontrolled stress can lower
the body’s immune response as well as
impair the ability to recover fully from
intense exercise, and we need to
provide additional resources to help
athletes address these challenges.”
Barker, 26, said she did not know
anyone who was unaffected by the
pandemic. “I’m fortunate because the
majority of my funding comes from UK
Sport. The extras on top of that have
fallen away a bit, but for people riding
for smaller teams it’s been more
difficult. For some there’s been a com-
plete loss of salary, not just a cut.”

Rick Broadbent

Just when it was thought that Kyle
Edmund’s dismal run of form could not
get much worse, it did. The British No 2
failed to convert 14 break points and did
not win a single game in the second set
of a first-round defeat at the Cologne
Championships.
Edmund, ranked No 47 in the world,
suffered his fifth loss in six matches
since mid-August, going down 6-4, 6-0
to Yoshihito Nishioka, the world No 56
from Japan. Four of these defeats have
come against lower-ranked opposition.

It is such a contrast to February,
when Edmund, 25, won his second ATP
tour title at the New York Open. He
now appears devoid of confidence and
is making too many unforced errors.
“I was just too inconsistent,” Edmund
said. “I didn’t take any chances.”
Also of concern is the chronic pain in
his left knee. While he has been manag-
ing this for about two years, it flared up
again last month and forced him to
withdraw from the French Open.
“I am here because I feel like I can
play,” Edmund said. “My knee won’t be
throbbing [the day after]. It [the pain] is
always there but I feel fine now.”

The 18-year-old Osborne has

been tipped for greatness
