JUNKANOO FESTIVAL 3
Extravagant carnivals, such as the
Junkanoo Festival in the Bahamas,
are held throughout the Caribbean.
People dress up in flamboyant
costumes, stage elaborate parades,
and dance in the street in the days
before Lent, the 40-day period of
fasting and restraint leading up to
the Christian festival of Easter.
1 STATUE OF LIBERTY, NEW YORK
The Statue of Liberty was erected in 1886 and stands 93 m (305 ft) tall in
New York Harbor. It was the first thing millions of immigrants saw as they
sailed into New York in the 1800s and 1900s to start a new life. The
statue has become a symbol of freedom and opportunity.
