Michigan will cover

vs. rusty Wisconsin

By Matt YouMans

LAS VEGAS — Redshirt
freshman Graham Mertz made
a strong first impression in his
debut as Wisconsin’s starting
quarterback. Nearly a month
later, Mertz still is waiting to
make his second start.
The Badgers, tangled in a
COVID-19 web, have not
played and rarely have prac-
ticed since Mertz completed
20 of 21 passes for 248 yards
and five touchdowns in a 45-7
victory over Illinois on Oct.

  1. Despite the team’s inactiv-
    ity and uncertainty surround-
    ing Mertz, Wisconsin has been
    bet to a 4½-point favorite
    against Michigan in Ann Ar-
    bor on Saturday.
    Bettors are obviously down
    on the Wolverines, who
    opened as 2-point favorites
    and are off back-to-back poor
    performances in losses to In-
    diana and Michigan State. Mi-
    chigan’s sudden demise has
    put coach Jim Harbaugh on
    the hot seat.
    Wisconsin will be missing at
least 10 players as part of the
    Big Ten’s protocol, which
    mandates a 21-day absence for
    players after a positive COVID
test. Mertz is expected to be
cleared to play, but the long
    layoff should be considered a
    negative.
    Two weeks ago, the Wolver-
    ines would have been around

storm the field and hit the
road the next week to face a
rival. In the most dramatic
high-stakes game of the sea-
son, the Irish upended Clem-
son 47-40 in double overtime.
That was the game Notre
Dame’s players had circled
for the entire offseason, not
this one. Eagles quarterback
Phil Jurkovec, a transfer from
Notre Dame and former four-
star recruit, passed for two
touchdowns in BC’s 34-28
loss at Clemson on Oct. 31.
Sharp money has been show-
ing on the underdog this
week, pushing the line down
from 16.
New Mexico (+17.5) over
Nevada: The Lobos, who
were a complete mess at the
tail end of former coach Bob
Davie’s tenure, are turning
into live ’dogs under new
coach Danny Gonzales and
defensive coordinator Rocky
Long. New Mexico, a two-
touchdown underdog, rolled
up 279 rushing yards in a 39-33
loss at Hawaii last week. This
game will be played in Las Ve-
gas, the Lobos’ new home on
the road during a COVID cri-
sis in New Mexico.
LAST WEEK: 1-2. Michigan
(L), Florida (W), Oregon State
(L).
SEASON: 17-12-1.

Giants, Jets fans: Check out these prospects

By GreG JoYce

While the Giants will chase
a second straight win, the Jets
are off this weekend, making
room for more time to watch
college football and dream
about the players that could
one day make an impact at
MetLife Stadium.
A handful of Saturday’s
games have been postponed
by COVID-19 outbreaks —
including more than half of
the SEC slate — but there are
still a number of games on
the docket that feature play-
ers that could be of interest
to the Jets or Giants next
April.
There’s one more week to
get through without Trevor
Lawrence on your television
screens, with Clemson on a
bye, but until he returns next
week, here’s a look at which
players and games to keep an
eye on:

Oregon St. at Washington,
11 p.m., FS1
Washington had its season-
opener delayed by a week but
now they will get to show off
what is expected to be a stout
secondary, with cornerbacks
Elijah Molden (an All-Pac-12
nickelback) and Keith Taylor
(a 6-foot-3 threat) leading the
way. The Huskies also have
left tackle Jaxson Kirkland and
tight end Cade Otton among
their top draft-eligible pros-
pects.
Oregon State’s most attract-
ive player to Jets and Giants
fans may be pass rusher Ham-
ilcar Rashed Jr., who racked
up 14 sacks and 22.5 tackles for
loss last week.
Louisville at Virginia,
3:30 p.m., ACC Network
Though Louisville is in the
midst of a down year after be-
ing ranked earlier in the sea-
son, wide receiver Tutu
Atwell remains a major threat.

He’s only 5-foot-9 but his
speed plays if he gets into
space.
For Virginia, it’ll be hard to
miss outside linebacker
Charles Snowden, who meas-
ures in at 6-foot-7 and 240
pounds and has 8.5 tackles for
loss in six games.
TCU at West Virginia,
Noon, FOX
Both the Jets and Giants
addressed their safety posi-
tion in the draft last year, but
if they go back to that well
this year, TCU has one of the
best in Trevon Moehrig. He’s
joined by Ar’Darius Wash-
ington for a strong safety
tandem. Garret Wallow is
also a standout inside line-
backer.
West Virginia’s top draft
prospect may be defensive
tackle Darius Stills, but line-
backer Tony Fields II is an-
other to watch.

3½-point favorites in this
game, so the move in the bet-
ting market appears to be an
overreaction. Mertz and the
Badgers are still somewhat of
a mystery. Illinois has been the
worst team in the Big Ten, so
it’s reasonable to wonder if
Wisconsin is worthy of so
much respect.
The pick: Michigan +4.5
Arkansas (+17) over
FLORIDA: The Razorbacks,
3-3 straight up and 6-0 against
the spread, are the surprise
team in the SEC. It’s not going
to be surprising if they put a
scare into the Gators, who are
in a possible letdown spot
after a breakthrough victory
over Georgia last week. Ar-
kansas quarterback Feleipe
Franks, a transfer from Flor-
ida, will be highly motivated.
Franks has completed 67.2 per-
cent of his passes with 14
touchdowns and three inter-
ceptions this season. It’s
doubtful he can outduel Kyle
Trask, but the Hogs are capa-
ble of covering a big number.
