- Using gray print 4^1 ∕ 2 " squares, dark
gray print 4^1 ∕ 2 " squares, and remaining
leaf appliqués, repeat Step 6 to make
18 B units and 18 C units (Diagram 5).
EMBROIDER AND ASSEMBLE
BLOCKS J AND K
Measurements include^1 ∕ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward
darker fabric.
- Using fine-point marking pen
and a ruler, on an A unit mark
center vein line on leaf from tip to
tip. Using variegated magenta perle
cotton, chain-stitch on marked line.
Referring to Embroidery Closeups,
Units A–C, page 55, use chain stitches,
featherstitches, and/or fly stitches
to embroider two, three, or four side
veins, as desired. (Kori prefers to
embroider the side veins freehand,
instead of marking stitching lines,
to prevent lines from showing under
the decorative stitches.) Repeat to
embroider each remaining A unit. - Using variegated purple perle
cotton for B units and variegated pink
perle cotton for C units, repeat Step 1
to embroider center and side veins on
six B units and six C units. - Fold a gray polka dot 5^1 ∕ 2 " square in
half vertically and horizontally. Press
lightly to make placement guidelines;
unfold. Repeat with remaining gray
polka dot 5^1 ∕ 2 " squares. - Tape Swirl Embroidery Pattern and
Placement Diagram, Pattern Sheet 3,
on a light box or bright window. Center
prepared square atop pattern, aligning
fabric guidelines with lines on pattern;
tape in place. Using fine-point marking
pen, trace swirl design onto fabric;
make small dots for French knots.
Repeat with remaining gray polka dot
5 1 ∕ 2 " squares. - Referring to Swirl Embroidery
Pattern and Placement Diagram
and stitch key and using one strand
of variegated black perle cotton,
embroider a swirl design to make a
Unit D. Repeat to make 18 D units total. - With appliqués and embroidery
centered, trim units A–D to 3^1 ∕ 2 " square
including seam allowances. - Sew squares together, stitching
directly on marked leaf line. Cut out
leaf shape^1 ∕ 8 " beyond stitched line.
Make small clips into seam allowance.
Carefully cut a small slit in center of
one fabric layer (Diagram 2). - Gently turn leaf shape right
side out through slit to make a leaf
appliqué (Diagram 3). Use a stiletto or
chopstick to gently push out corners
and smooth out edges; press. - Repeat steps 1–3 to prepare 54 leaf
appliqués total. - Fold each leaf appliqué in half
vertically and horizontally, press
lightly to make placement guidelines,
and unfold. - Fold a gray tone-on-tone 4^1 ∕ 2 "
square in half diagonally twice. Press
lightly to make placement guidelines;
unfold. Referring to Diagram 4,
center a prepared leaf appliqué, slit
